BACKSTORY

Richmond had the first successful large scale electric trolley transit system in the country and was used as the model for most subsequent trolley systems around the world. The Richmond Union Passenger Railway began trolley service in 1888 with a ride costing 5¢. Large cars could carry up to 100 people, had a max speed of 15 mph, and in less than a decade trolleys eliminated animal powered street transit in major cities. But by the late 1940's, personal automobiles and bus lines had reduced trolley transit in Richmond so much that trolley cars were no longer needed and Trolley #408 gave the final ride down Main Street in 1949. So what to do with all of those trolley cars? Transit officials doused them in gasoline and set more than 50 cars on fire.
