BACKSTORY

“The Devil in the Belfry” is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe published in 1839.

The story revolves around a town called Vondervotteimittiss (wonder-what-time-it-is). The entire structure of the town is based on rigid order and tradition, including ringing the clocktower with punctuality. One day, a devil shows up in the town playing a large fiddle. The Devil goes into the clocktower and rings 13 o’clock, sending the town into chaos by disrupting their regimented way of life.
